Hashing saved files to show they have not changed

If you later need to show that a saved record has not been edited, a hash taken at the time provides simple evidence.

What a hash is

A hash function turns a file into a short fixed-length string. Changing even one character in the file produces a completely different hash.

Creating hashes

Most operating systems include command-line tools to compute SHA-256 hashes. Record the hash in your log next to the file name.

Checking later

Recompute the hash and compare. Matching values show the file is identical to the version you recorded.

What it does not prove

A hash shows your copy has not changed since you hashed it. It does not prove the original Omega Market page was accurate.
